The year I skipped going &quot;home&quot; for Christmas and instead hosted a hot cocoa party for queers in San Francisco was a defiant break from tradition. My family freaked. But I did it anyway, and it changed our relationship to the holidays.

Now I go visit my family because I want to.  And they know that when I show up, it&#039;s on my own terms.

There is no more obligation.  Only celebration.</description>
